Hi.

Is it possible to work on an iPad with Pinegrow Online?

No, in that it’s not designed for it. but it would be great 😁

Edit:

I should add, I wouldn’t want to build a complete site on the iPad, but it would be handy for minor amendments / updates when traveling.

Hi @Josan ,
it was once possible via a live/online version.
but this was discontinued.

Maybe one day it may return, enabling many other devices to run Pinegrow. But that would be up to the Devs team, workload etc. So I wouldn’t have thought it would reappear.

see

> Hello, I’ve been using Pinegrow Live on Fedora Linux for quite some time, and it perfectly works. I wonder whether the version 7 update would also come to it? It seems Pinegrow Live is currently in version 6.8, and there is no sign of available updates. Should I expect another Pinegrow Live version instead? Or is Pinegrow Live discontinued? Thanks in advance, Márton Lente

It was discontued around 2022-23

It was good and filled your use case scenario.

Interesting, that came out during a period I wasn’t focused on Pinegrow, I tried to find some screenshots, for curiosity sake.

and well, there is this ALSO…This.

which , i actually realised.. .is what I meant.
Pinegrow live…which is **discontinued**
and not
Pinegrow online…which is **still active** - I just logged into it.

all these little hidden Pinegrow things.
like trying to find a particular topic in the Online docs…
It takes Arcane knowledge and slight of hand.

I’m not sure if this is still going…
the signup page is still there,

monthly subscription, but as No one from the Dev Team replied to @Josan to suggest this to them I didn’t post it to say it was an option, in case it was discontinued/no longer promoted.

**HOWEVER.**

If you have a current Pinegrow Licence, you can also login to the live version with it and Hey Presto!
SO this LIVE version is free/included if you have a current Pinegrow licence.
a win win situation.

But, there ya go, here it is.
Does anyone still use this much?

It seemed like an excellent solution in this use case scenario BUT… saving the project locally proved problematic for me using the BRAVE browser.

Pinegrow Live offers an option to save locally.

but when selecting it, it would say
_Computer Says No_..

 ![Screenshot 2025-06-23 at 11.24.12](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex036/uploads/pinegrow/original/2X/c/c451c07fe17d019405928d3877d9e9d6c13101a9.jpeg)

However, after following the Instructions… (last but not least.)

> **[Edit local projects with Pinegrow Online | Pinegrow Web Editor](https://docs.pinegrow.com/announcements/edit-local-projects-with-pinegrow-online/)**
>
> You can now use Pinegrow Online to edit projects that are stored on your computer – free for all users of Pinegrow Web Editor.

Where it states

## Limitations

There are a couple of limitations:

- Working with local files requires File System API that is currently only implemented in Chrome and Edge.

and downloading and installing Google Chrome, which I dont use, due to advertising and privacy.

it worked following those instructions.

so then, I had to look into how to
\*Enable File Access API \* in Brave browser… more arcane knowledge required with setting flags.

> **[Reddit - The heart of the internet](https://www.reddit.com/r/photopea/comments/1b1euhs/fixing_greyed_out_save_button_on_brave_browser/)**

to allow Brave to be able to save files locally.
Im going to try this now.

**YEP! That flag setting worked.**
So I can now stop whining about not being able to save files locally anymore.
Woo Hoo!

 ![Screenshot 2025-06-23 at 12.38.06](https://canada1.discourse-cdn.com/flex036/uploads/pinegrow/original/2X/7/7695f0a0831a62a4e8b8173ffdd455962e7e0c3d.jpeg)

so, on iPad, you could install Google Chrome and then be able to work and save files locally, as well as online in Pinegrow.

Although I would recommend using the Brave browser. Due to its hightened privacy and lack of adds and tracking.

>
> Download Brave Browser & Search Engine by Brave Software on the App Store. See screenshots, ratings and reviews, user tips, and more games like Brave Browser &…

but you might have to do some flag setting in order to be able to save files locally, as stated above.

I’m confused now 😂

Pinegrow online, I had a sub for when it launched, more to just support the cause. I got the impression live was something else?

Yep.. so was I !

thanks,
ive just gone back and … edited to correct my mistake.
I labelled them both the opposite way around so the correct version is now in the _too long_ reply and states.

Back to square one. 🤯

So what’s the difference between live and online? Apart from one not existing.

Online doesn’t play well on the iPad, well not when I first tried it when it came out, beside the UI not being optimised for touch, things like the side panel tabs don’t always work etc, it was a hit and miss. And I think there was a question about iPad support at the time and the answer was no.

To be fair you still have the issue of FTP. And another app I know that has an iPad version basically offers a blind FTP, which I have zero trust for - same for the app too 😬

Online… is web based and takes place in the browser,

And live was the usual App on device which… if I remember correctly was.. er.. _live_ in that it could have things/changes _pushed_ straight to it , like fixes and upgrades etc by the devs.

I still have it installed but if were to launch it it lets me know that there is an _upgrade_ to 8.x whatever and I dont run it as … Im pretty sure it will be nuked\*

And I wasnt using the online version on ipad as I didnt have one, but I had android tablet, with bluetooth keyboard and I thought it really rocked!
from memory.. I cant remember bugs now, but that was further away than my breakfast, so memory fades away…

Ive just got an old ipad now, so might fire it up.
If i can remember the password.
But… with a screen the size of a stamp, this wont be fun.

It’s not much more fun on a 13” iPad.

I think the idea is more appealing than the reality.

Well… it was a **WHITE** stamp… in Safari.
the iPad is iOS 12.5.7
so a bit old.
The source code isn’t actually written in Latin but.. deemed obsolete.
Safari Browser shows a blank page for the O N L I N E version 🙂

Too old to install either Chrome or Brave.

SO alas, I cant test it out.
Maybe if @Josan is still about he can check out the O N L I N E version on his _hopefully_ more modern iPad.

And give us a heads up on the result.
For me, This is a rabbit hole I’m now backing out of.
Curses!

I hate that.

Sorry. My English is very limited.

On my 13" iPad, I can open Pinegrow with my desktop application licence. I have tested it with Safari: It seems that I can save it in the browse, not locally. The touch controls do not work. The same with Chrome.

I understand that the size of the iPad is not ideal for working, but it would be fine for small changes. I suppose this use would be quite rare and it is logical that the development team would not be interested in spending time on it.

Oh thank you for the reply @Josan , and your English is good. 👍

I’m glad you got the ONLINE version to work,
with partial success.

Im sorry I confused it with the LIVE version which, wasn’t applicable, and is no longer available.

While the iPad use case scenario may be rare, at least you now know you can do it, with limited functionality.

Thanks for your update 🙂

Crikey!
That bad?
id used it on an Android tablet … ages ago, And I was rather pleased! I thought it was fab.
Tablet, BT keyboard and away to go!
but that was many versions ago.
Obviously the little screen real estate made it um, challenging.

ill have to see what tablets are still around and try again.
Probably have the same _your browser is not supported_ kind of thing I get on a lot of sites with older tech nowadays.

After Browser wars (hellish)days.. no one caters for umpteen different browsers anymore.

Its become much more _Update your hardware, Peasant!_
… maybe browser wars werent such a bad thing after all 😃
mmm… but who would earn a living from creating a browser nowadays?
no money in it (apart from Ad revenue) so they can just demand new hardware.
Crazy.

I tried on an iPad Air m2 running the Beta 26. It could be the beta, although the only issues I have had is the OS freezing occasionally using the new Windowed Apps feature.

I didn’t try with a mouse.. That might work better. I did try with my finger and Apple Pencil.

The one place I see that this could be useful is the WP plugin.

Pinegrow Online, as the name suggests, is a version of Pinegrow accessible through your browser. We recommend using browsers with the Chrome rendering engine. Pinegrow Online is not optimized or recommended for iPad, and this platform is not mentioned in our communications. On the other hand, Pinegrow Online lets you access Pinegrow’s features on systems where you can’t or don’t want to install the desktop version.

Live was an initiative that allowed updates to the Pinegrow desktop application without needing to install a new setup. It ended a while ago and was only available to a select few 😊

Note: Just adding that the time when Live was available allowed us to refine the live auto-update process for certain features, and we often push silent updates/fixes that are activated when Pinegrow is connected to the Internet. Of course, in the next version, these “live” updates are directly integrated into the production versions.
