Hello,
I have been using “The Loop” action on search.html page. That works ok, but should I be using “Show Posts” smart action instead? That doesn’t work …
I am not sure about the difference between the two actions. Is “The Loop” remnant of older versions?

Try to change the smart action into a regular WP action and you will see that Show Posts is a mix of several different actions.
Smart actions are made to make life easier in standard situations. To go further, using standard actions is the key.
