Anyone run into this crazy problem: When I installed Pinegrow I noticed that my Steam games stop updating, still could buy games and see game pages but not idownload/nstall them. Then 2 days ago I noticed that my Windows update kept timing out. I checked with my ISP to make sure it wasn’t them since it was happening to all of my computers (completely forgot that I installed Pinegrow on all 3 computers). Anyway I reinstalled Windows 11 on my computer and it was when I reinstalled Pinegrow that I noticed Steam stopped working again and I checked Windows update and low and behold it wasn’t working either. Have any of you run/ran into this problem? If so did you find a fix? I was so excited after looking at 10 programs and getting down to the last 2 and I was super happy with this app and hope I can find a solution that don’t include me getting my money back.
@etcwebdesigns we didn’t get any similar reports so far. On Windows, PG is just an app that gets installed by the InnoSetup installer. All files are copied to Pinegrow’s program folder, nothing is installed into system, no system settings are changed. There are no background processes or services.
Some considerations:
- The installer process could get stuck, potentially locking up some system resources. But a system restart would fix that.
- Pinegrow uses internal web server, by default running on port 40000. This could potentially conflict with some other app that uses the same port. But, if Pinegrow is not started then its server also doesn’t run.
Experiment:
- Restart your computer and do not run Pinegrow. Are the updates working?
Does anybody else have a similar experience?
Actually it is the nwjs.exe that my firewall has blocked that created this issue. I figured out that it was this program because I’m getting the same issue on 3 of my computers and 1 computer I reinstalled Windows and Steam. Both worked fine, then I installed PG and again my Windows update stopped working as did my Steam updates. I uninstalled PG and re-installed it this time blocking the nwjs.exe. All of my other items are working and It appears PG might work but I’m not sure.
This was running even when PG is closed. Not sure of Windows but Steam doesn’t use any ports close to the 40000 that PG uses.
I had perhaps a similar issue years ago but on macOS where I had self blocked another NW.js app and it was causing Pinegrow to not work properly. It was a bit odd how the status of two separate NW.js apps were affecting each other. It sounds really weird for you that it also hinders the Windows update, so I’m curious to hear the resolution for the instance you describe.
It looks like Steam in part uses a custom Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) so a similar related conflict may be present between the two Chromium based apps. Steam might have further entry into the system causing the hinderance for Windows due to Pinegrow conflicting with Steams Chromium.
Just a thought based upon what I experienced on macOS.
