Problems with Using Pinegrow on Archived sites

Hi there,
Im trying to recover some sites from

and After saving the pages
with respect to going through at reconstructing the prior lost sites of a recently deceased friend,
Im coming across an issue where PG isnt recognising anything on the pages when moving around the pages.

So clicking on anything on the page, doesnt trigger the highlighting of the code in the editor, or any other recognition of anything on the page.

there IS one error called out in PG at the initial load.
One I quite often see, in sites about
A span shouldnt contain a div
or such like,

but the whole usability within PG breaks.

if I open the same page within Brave browser, developer tools, then I can navigate everything.

in the attached video, this is how it opens, with developer tools, I then switch to PG 9.01 and
nothing works as expected.

I was about to attach the video and… I cant see the usual icons above!
Ok Ill post this then hopefully edit it and they will be there

That was wierd.
ok the icons/menu options are now visible above.

so here is the video.
Ok i cant .
max of 10MB

great UX so far with this report.

here is the url instead then.

ok …. this process is starting to suck…

So I cant upload the video or the URL.

my!
What a useful bug report this is turning into.

ok to be resumed I guess…
when something actually works

WHAT!!?

I cant even email support!
what the heck?

I attached the compressed project folder for you to check.

ok, if someone could get back to me….ive things to do and I cant get this done, so IM going to do the other things instead.
TTFN

ok, no word back.
@Emmanuel , is something up with your email system, where we cant attach projects for you to examine?

So any update/support yet?

how to provide/send info to pinegrow?
cheers

Hello,

Just a quick reminder that’s always useful for support requests:

Instead of trying to send the project to us, please create a shared link (Google Drive, Dropbox, WeTransfer, etc.) and send that link to our support address. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!!

Thanks for that, but
Response took too long, and I used other software tools to resolve the issue instead, as I needed to get it done.
3 days, needed it done sorry. would have been nice to use PG for it, but couldnt.

Will do the whole file sharing uploading, thing later if I have time. I currently use none of the services you quote.

Here is the link.

just open as URL and you can check it yourselves, see the issue, saves me all the hassle.

you will have this one issue flagged with PG.

Then it fails to render the tree, link code to cursor position etc etc

carry on  TTFN

Looks like archive.com server sends headers after the body was sent causing remote url fetch in Pinagrow to fail. Opening urls from Archive.org is a very atypical use case for Pinegrow so will leave it as it is.

The easiest workaround is to save the complete HTML page locally - with browser’s Save as - and then open that in Pinegrow.

Hi @matjaz ,

Yeah thats what I did, saved page locally with save as.
BUT.

the results are the exactly the same, try it

O:-)

Theres no point in me going through the hoops to get that same page to you, downloading, compressing, commenting etc, when you can just save it yourself, the same as me and hey presto!
you have a bug ! <3

Im guessing that the archive site is doing something wierd but even the saved page, BORKS PG so that it cant overcome the issue and function correctly. weird as PG just gives that one error, but then just…doesnt work.

Thanks for having a quick look, but I was actually working on the saved page, not the url.

OK ttfn, let me know if youd like me to do anything else, other than just b quiet

PS<
I user the archive.org site quite a bit for recovering old sites for people who have stuffed things, let domain names expire/ which then get cyber squat.

it would be great to use PG on the saved sites and have it work as a lot of the older sites use pretty crap code, irrespective of the archive.org’s additional wobbly worm, coding wierdness, so I have my work cut out anyway

I often use sitesucker to download the sites too… I it localises the directory navigation structure… so you can navigate it locally offline.
actually I should check and see if I
saved page
or
downloaded and localised with Sitesucker.

great tool, been using it for years, along with archive for org for sites which upset people have stuffed/let lapse.

I was actually hoping to use PG Snapshots for this role,

but alas, that didnt seem to be part of its role /use case scenario.

And for some reason , If I use PG Open from URL -which I thought would have been PERFECT….

…for some reason… i cant save the resources….. which it populates the page view with…
I mean they are THERE!!!… but if I work on the page and SAVE IT.

it just saves the changes Ive made… unless Im totatlly misunderstanging something/not selecting some option.

If it SAVED page… with media etc, I could drop some other tools from the chain.

ok cheers anyway.

I had to turn off JS using the button in the top bar to interact with the page.

HI there, thanks @Cary , yeah that does work in order to get the code view to tally with the cursor position, but some of the site, unsurprisingly seems to break.

i.e. the top banner doesnt appear after turning off the archive.org tool banner in front of it, and the image layout is a bit bonkers, with things/images juxtapositioned over each other etc.

So while turning off JS does work, in order to get the code editor to align with cursor position on the visual page view, this page view layout has gone all awry and is no longer a true representation of the page layout.

So thanks for the heads up there, it is indeed a quick check for why its not working, I didnt think to try that, as I was hacking the additional code away from the Archive.org’s potrayal of the saved site instead.

So getting rid of the their banner tool and a LOAD of their other stuff etc, and then it also worked again , but I’d resolved to chrome Dev tools in order to figure this stuff out as it worked on the archived page in order to see what was where, whereas PG broke and couldn’t correlate cursor to code to page view.

I will just check the JS button in PG for a quick look from now on too. thanks.

I also Faced this problem for my two sites  . Finally fixed now
